Trekking Across Nahuel Huapi National Park

Hiking Season: November through May
Duration: 7 days
Level: Intermediate- Advanced Hikers

Multiday hut to hut guided trekking in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaThis guided trekking trip takes you deep into South America's Andes to explore an untouched Patagonia. Argentina's Nahuel Huapi National Park protects wild lands of the Andes Mountains and deep blue waters of Patagonia's Lakes District, and Andescross is one of the few authorized companies to run guided trekking, backpacking, and mountaineering trips here. The Nahuel Huapi National Park was Argentina's first National Park, and it surrounds the town of Bariloche, Argentina, where we begin this guided trek. Our mountain guides will take you hiking through the diverse ecosystems of the Argentina's Northern Patagonian Andes: hanging glaciers, lush forested valleys, granite domes, scenic ridges, summits where the condors play above, alpine meadows, deep blue lagoons, bamboo jungles, and creek crossings.

Day 1:
We begin this guided trek in Colonia Suiza, a little farm village outside of Bariloche, Argentina founded by people from Switzerland at the beginning of the XX century. Your mountain guide will take you through a coihue and cypress forest hiking beside a stream. We hike through a valley and then climb up to the foot of Cerro Negro. Here we find the deep alpine lake, Laguna Negra and beside it the Manfredo Segre Mountain Hut (1.650m). Relax by the lake, homemade dinner and malbec in the Refugio.

Night in the Manfredo Segre Mountain Hut or tents.

Approx. 12 km with 500 meters elevation change in 4 hours of hiking.

Day 2:
Multiday guided trek in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaEarly in the morning, after a good breakfast in the Laguna Negra Mountain Hut, we start hiking while the fresh moisture is raising up from the Andes Mountains. Your mountain guide will take you around the lake, and then climb up to the mountain saddle on a mellow scree slope. Hike down for few hours to a nice lunch spot beside a clear stream. After lunch, the last stretch to camp is a hike up gaining about 400 meters elevation. The whole climb is with the views of the Andes Range and the lakes of beautiful Patagonia below us. The guide will set up camp beside a lake and the river that drains out of it, prepare a hot, tasty dinner, and you can enjoy the sunset in the mountains. The scenery from our camp is fantastic! Patagonian Alpine lakes, Brazo Tristeza arm of Lake Nahuel Huapi, and some of the main volcanoes in this part of the Andes: Tronador, Osorno, Lanin.

Night in tents.

Approx. 8 km with 700 meters elevation change in 5-6 hours of hiking.

Day 3:
Multiday guided hike traverse in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaToday, your mountain guide will take you on a long journey: gain some vertical meters, hike on granite dome formations, pass some snow patches, "Crystal Ridge", alpine meadows, and bright blue lakes. This part of Patagonia is called the Lakes District, and today you will realize why as we hike by several and see even more in the distance! We spend a lot of time hiking above tree line today, and it is very possible to see an Andean Condor, the largest bird in the world, soaring above us while we are up high!

Night in tents.

Approx. 14 km with 600 meters elevation change in 6 hours of hiking.

Day 4:
Laguna Azul - Multiday guided trekking in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaWake up in your cozy tent beside another beautiful alpine lake. After your mountain guides pack up camp, we'll start off hiking on granite domes for less than an hour until we reach the views of the beautiful Laguna Azul, Blue Lagoon. Enormous walls of granite come down to the water. We keep hiking up, passing Laguna Jujuy, until we reach a col between two peaks. As you come up to the saddle, the huge, glacier-covered Mount Tronador comes into view. It is closer than ever and tomorrow we will be at the base of it! Below us is a lagoon with a big sandy beach that looks like it should be in the tropics and not in the middle of the Patagonian Andes. Laguna Ilon will be our camp for the night, and your mountain guide will set up the tents in the trees near the beach. This is a great spot for a swim, if you are hot after the hike!

Night in tents.

Approx. 10 km with 400 meters elevation change in 4 hours of hiking.

Day 5:
Laguna Ilon - Multiday backpack trek in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaToday is a less demanding day of hiking, and we reach civilization again... or at least a hint of it! After 4 hours of hiking down with your mountain guide, you arrive to a tiny settlement in the middle of the Nahuel Huapi National Park called Pampa Linda. "Pampa Linda" means "Pretty Grassland" in Spanish, and it is in the wide valley at the base of Cerro Tronador. This is where the trail to hike up Mount Tronador or go to the Refugio Otto Meiling begins. In Pampa Linda there is a Rangers' Station, camp sites, little ice cream shop, stables for horseback riding, and a family-owned hosteria where we'll spend the night. Have a well-deserved hot shower, and a homemade meal with veggies fresh from the garden. Every so often you will hear booms from Mt. Tronador, the "Thunderer", as huge chunks of its hanging glaciers fall off the cliffs.

Night in Hosteria Pampa Linda ***

Approx. 7 km with 400 meters elevation change in 4 hours of hiking.

Day 6:
Multiday hut to hut trek in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaWell-rested, we start this morning hiking at the foot of Mt Tronador, which is the highest mountain in the Nahuel Huapi National Park and Bariloche area at 3554 meters. Your mountain guide will take you hiking through a Valdivian Forest, temperate rain forest, and green meadows. You will see and hear the hanging glaciers of Mt. Tronador to the left as you hike. We will trek up to Paso de las Nubes, Cloudy Pass, (1400 m), and then descend to the Frias Valley. This is an area where Andean Condors bring their young to practice flying, so make sure to keep an eye on the sky. We come to the hanging Frias Glacier and make camp beside the milky-turquoise colored river and below the impressive glacier.

Night in tents.

Approx. 12 km with 400 meters elevation change in 6 hours of hiking.

Day 7:
Multiday trek Nahuel Huapi national park in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaWe wake up below the hanging glacier, and on our day's hike the mountain guide will take us along the river that drains from it to its lake. The glacier, river, and lake all share the same name: "Frias", meaning "cold". The water from glaciers is sometimes referred to as "glacial milk" because it has a white tint from the very fine sediment suspended in it. This sediment is produced by the glacier sliding slowly forward and grinding smooth the rock below it. Along the river, we will trek through a deep jungle of bamboo and ancient coihue trees. Once we arrive at Lago Frias, we wait for the boat to take us across. The lake is cold, but refreshing for a quick swim before the boat arrives. After cruising the Frias Lake, we arrive to Puerto Blest and take another boat on a long cruise back to Bariloche. Cruising the Nahuel Huapi Lake is very scenic with lots of little islands and peninsulas in the National Park. The boat comes to port in front of the huge Llao Llao Luxury Hotel, about a 25 km from downtown. Your mountain guide will drive you to your lodging in Bariloche.

Approx. 8 km with 50 meters elevation change in 4 hours of hiking.

For this trek, we strongly recommend hiring a Professional IFMGA UIAGM or AAGM Mountain Guides.

Rates: Minimum 2 people.

Glaciers, Jungles, and Deep Blue Lakes - Patagonia Trekking Adventure

Mount Tronador multiday guided trek in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaHiking Season: December through May
Duration: 5 days
Level: Intermediate hikers- comfortable on horseback (4 hours), in alpine terrain, and hiking with crampons on glacier terrain

This guided backpacking trek is a great way to experience the diverse terrain and ecosystems of South America's Southern Andes and the Patagonian Lakes District. On this trip we will enjoy part of the route of the 1999 Discovery Channel's Eco Challenge. One of the highlights of this backpacking trip is hiking with your mountain guide across the glaciers of one of the highest mountains in the Northern Patagonian Andes, Mt. Tronador. The views of the Patagonian Lakes District from this huge, glaciated volcano are breathtaking! Mount Tronador is an excellent place to observe Andean Condors, the largest birds of flight in the world! We will ride horses part of the way up Cerro Tronador until we reach the border of Chile and do customs in a very remote cabin.

Multiday trek traverse in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaThen, the rest of this guided hiking adventure through the Nahuel Huapi National Park is on foot! Camping along the trek in our tents in spectacular locations, and we will also visit a typical Patagonian mountain hut, or "refugio". After descending Mount Tronador with your mountain guide, you enter a Valdivian temperate rainforest.

Hike through a lush jungle along a river of glacier milk. We reach a large turquoise lake and take a ferry crossing to get to a port where another boat will be waiting for us to cruise one of the big branches of the Nahuel Huapi Lake. We arrive in Llao Llao, just 25 km from downtown Bariloche.

Multiday trekking in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaDay 1:
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel or the airport in Bariloche and drive 80 km to Pampa Linda. Here we will spend the night in a family-owned hosteria at the foot of Mount Tronador. Dinner with your Andescross Mountain Guide and get ready for the adventure!

Pampa Linda, "Pretty Grasslands", is a cute little settlement in the middle of the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Other than the hosteria, there is a Ranger's Station, camp sites, and the stables where you will meet your partner for the ride up tomorrow!

Night in Hosteria Pampa Linda***.

Day 2:
Multiday trekking in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaWe start the day on horseback and ride at a mellow pace through the forest for about 4 hours gaining a lot of elevation. The horses will leave us in a high alpine meadow, Mallin Chileno, near the Chilean Border. Here we get our passports stamped in a very remote location. Just a little hut in the middle of the Andes serves as the customs office! With your mountain guide, you will hike from the border of Argentina and Chile on the south face of Mount Tronador. There are lots of waterfalls and volcanic formations along the 3 hour hike to Refugio Tronador, aka Refugio Viejo. This little mountain hut is at 2200 meters and very close to Tronador's largest glacier, Glacier Manso. Your mountain guide will set up the tents, or we can sleep in the vivac hut.

Night in tents or Refugio Tronador.

Approx. 5-6 km with 450 meters elevation change in 4 hours of hiking.

Day 3:
Glacier hike multiday guided trek in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaAfter breakfast, your mountain guide will help you put on all of the glacier gear: crampons, harness, rope. Hike across Manso Glacier, enjoying the view of Pico Internacional and Pico Argentino of Mt. Tronador (3354m). Very beautiful trek in with views of the Patagonian Andes and volcanos in Chile! You will enjoy cravasses, seracs, and hiking on the glacier with very little altitude gain. Andean Condors, the largest birds of flight in the world, love to come to Mount Tronador to play in the wind. This is where the condors bring their young to practice soaring in the drafts around the mountain. Keep an eye on the sky, or if they come to check you out, you'll definitely notice the big shadow on the snow! Once we are on the other side of the Manso Glacier we arrive to Refugio Otto Meiling. This Mountain Hut is staffed, so we we will enjoy a nice, hot typical Patagonian meal in the heights of the mountains. Relax by the fire, and then head upstairs to bed.

Night in Otto Meiling Mountain Hut.

Approx. 6 km with 200 meters elevation change in 4 hours of hiking.

Day 4:
Mount Tronador - Frias valley multiday guided trek in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaAfter breakfast in Refugio Otto Meiling, we leave the hut, and your mountain guide will rope everyone up to hike across the smaller Alerce Glacier. Then, we take off our glacier gear once we are across and start hiking down to Paso de las Nubes, Cloudy Pass (1400mts). There are waterfalls all around as we hike down Tronador heading Northeast. We will hike down from Paso de las Nubes to the Frias Valley where we will camp at the head of the Frias River. The hanging Frias Glacier is the third of Mount Trondador's 7 glaciers that you will experience in just a couple of days. The glacier feeds the river with its waterfalls and occasional chunks of ice falling down the cliff. This is the end of glacier terrain for our trek. Your mountain guides will put up the tents at the base of Mt. Tronador where we are going to spend the night at 1000 meters with the sound of seracs pieces falling from the glacier. Do not worry! We are a kilometer away!

Night in tents.

Approx. 8 km with 400 meters elevation change (hiking down) in 5 hours of hiking.

Day 5:
Tronador from Frias lake multiday guided trek in Bariloche, Patagonia ArgentinaWake up to the sound of the waterfalls coming from Glacier Frias, and after your mountain guide breaks camp, we will hike on mostly flat ground through the lush Frias Valley along the river to a large lake with the same name. The flora in this valley is beautiful, and has a tropical look to it even though we are in the middle of Patagonia! This jungle is full of bamboo and coihue trees, and is called Selva Valdiviana, or Valdivian temperate rainforest. The Frias River comes directly from Mt. Tronador's glacier, so there is a lot of sediment suspended in the water. The glacier grinds off the rock it travels over slowly into this fine sediment, and the melted water is called glacier milk. When we reach the turquoise Lago Frias, you can have a dip in the lake while we wait for the boat. "Frias" means "cold", but the water is still nice for a quick splash or to soak your feet. Done with our trekking, we can enjoy two boat rides through the Nahuel Huapi National Park. The first takes us across Lago Frias, and then we have a quick 3 km bus ride to Puerto Blest on Lago Nahuel Huapi. The cruise on Lake Nahuel Huapi takes about an hour and a half and is very scenic passing little islands and protected lands all around. We arrive to Puerto Pañuelo in front of the large luxury hotel Llao Llao, 25 km from downtown Bariloche. Your mountain guide will take you to your lodging in Bariloche.
